Now, this may come us a surprise to some people, not too many I hope, but there is to be a referendum on June 23rd, 2016 as to whether the United Kingdom should leave the European Union.

Since David Cameron confirmed this some weeks back, we have been inundated with information from both sides of the divide. Doom and gloom from the stay campaign and accusations of scaremongering from the leave gang.

The only definite conclusion I have come to so far is the media have saddled the leave camp with a name that sounds like a bad breakfast cereal, which is unfair as they have a very informative website, Leave.eu.

By now, you must be wondering what this has to do with us. Let me tell you.

This week the government has announced it is to launch a massive advertising campaign to extol the virtues of remaining in the European Community. This being the government like all governments, have decided that the cost of this campaign, some £9,000,000, will come from the taxpayers.

This has brought howls of protest from leave.eu claiming that David Cameron and the stay gang are not playing fair, perhaps they are not, but they are the government.

What intrigues me is the government have said the campaign will be spread over several media outlets. Facebook, Twitter and all the other electronic media, and I am pretty sure someone in the cabinet probably suggested e-mail.

But, despite the trend towards electronic methods of information distribution, HMG have decided the mainstay of this campaign will be a door drop of 27,000,000 16pp brochures.

It would appear someone has got through to those in charge and pointed out that e-mails and other electronic messages can be easily deleted, especially ones coming from the government.

They have come to understand something we have known all along.

The best way to get your message across to people is to deliver it to them through their letterbox.

You cannot delete a printed brochure or leaflet, and a large number of people will hang to the government’s 16pp booklet for a few weeks.

And – as we know with leaflets, probably a lot of people will read it!
